Star centre Spike Hartmann day to day with lower body injury

Fans of the Wings were visibly upset as they watched Spike Hartmann, the leading scorer in Div 13, leave last night’s game of shinny late in the 3rd period with what looked to be a serious groin injury.

GM Mike Godbout was tight lipped at his morning presser, saying “It didn’t look great, but it’s too early to tell.” With the Wings set to open the playoffs on Monday night, gritty 2nd line centre Ross Machon has apparently cleared his schedule for the entire weekend to try to massage that groin back to health.

Tension appeared to be running high within the Wings organization. An anonymous source reported hearing a shouting match between coach Shean and upper management. “It was a meaningless game and the last thing we want to see is our star players getting hurt, that’s all I’ll say about that” quipped Godbout.

With Calder favorite Mark “Hammer” Hamad also out for disciplinary reasons, the Wings will have to rely on their depth scoring. “This is why we went out and signed Roger Needham in the off-season,” said Godbout. Critics judged the deal harshly at the time claiming it was too much money and too much term for a veteran player over 40, but Godbout looks like a genius right now. Even tough to please Hartmann referred to Godbout as a ‘better looking Kyle Dubas.’

Hartmann will meet with team doctors again on Monday to make a decision about Monday’s game. “One thing I can say for sure is we won’t do anything stupid” said Coach Shean. “If Spike’s lower body injury isn’t 100%, we’re not going to risk doing more damage by dressing him too soon. I’ll even play centre and D at the same time if I have to” said Shean.
