Wings extend unbeaten streak to 8 games after 2-2 tie with The Bulldogs
The Carleton Tavern Wings extended their season-opening unbeaten streak to 8 games after a hard fought 2-2 tie with the Bulldogs last night.
Star winger Matt Sharron was a last minute scratch with what the team is calling “dad back”, but were able to recall Roger Needham on an emergency basis to fill in. The Wings were almost dealt another blow as Mike Hartmann was not in the warm-up (which briefly fueled trade rumours) but was able to dress at the last minute.
“We already knew Sharron was “injured”, so we were a little worried we’d be without Hartmann as well, but it all worked out,” said coach/GM Mike Godbout. “We were fortunate to be able to call up Needham at the last minute to fill in as well.”
Although the Wings got off to a quick start with lots of pressure and a few great chances, the first period ended being down 1-0. Coach Godbout then switched up the lines, uniting Hartmann and Needham for the first time this season. Hartmann was able to pounce on a few giveaways and score a couple goals, and the final ended up 2-2.
The game was chippy at times, with the teams combining for 12 penalty minutes. The next game the two play should be interesting as some scores were left unsettled in this one.
“There were a few plays I didn’t like to be honest. I don’t mind a good battle, but they used their sticks a lot and I thought they got away with a lot too,” said Ross Machon, who got a penalty right at the final buzzer. “We’ll settle it next time we play them, hopefully with Rick [Shean] back in the lineup for us.”
As usual, Alec Casey held the fort for the Wings making several key stops to secure the point and keep the unbeaten streak alive.
The Wings now have a 6-0-2 record and sit atop the div 13 standings. Their next game is on the 25th against the third place Reapers.
