Capping off an unbelievable season which saw the Carleton Tavern Wings win the Presidents Trophy for the second time in franchise history, they are now league champions.

In a gritty 3-1 victory last night in front of a sold out Ice House, the Wings put together a game for the ages.

“We played a full 60 minutes and gave it 110% out there every shift,” said captain Matt Deline. “I’m so proud of these guys.”

The Wings got goals from Rick Shean, Mark Hamad and an empty netter from Martmann to seal the championship victory. Backup goalie Nails came in and played a great game, stopping 28 of 29 shots.

“I admit, I was a bit nervous,” laughed Nails. “But once I made a few early saves I settled in and found my groove.”

Mark Hamad capped off an unbelieveable playoffs with a beautiful short side goal that ended up being the game winner.

“Our D made a great play at the blue line to keep the puck in and I saw a bit of room on the glove side,” explained Hamad. “I’ve had a lot of great days in my young life, but this has to be up there as one of the best.”

Hamad was announced as the playoff MVP after putting up 7 points in 5 games.

“It’s an honor for sure, but I’m just happy we won.”

Now begins the long off-season which does have a few lingering questions surrounding the club:

Will Alec Casey be back to keep his #1 position?

Will Liotti and O’Grady sign extensions?

Rugged winger Jamie McLennan also needs a new deal, and rumours are swirling he is looking for something in the 5-6 year range. Will he explore free agency?

In the meantime, the Wings players are flying home today and the parade is planned for next week.
