The Carleton Tavern Wings got a much needed boost last night as fan and player favourite Mike Martmann returned to the lineup. His impact was felt right away as he tallied a goal and an assist in his return to the lineup.

“It means so much to have him back out there on the ice with us,” said second year player Connor O’Grady. “His impact on the ice is obvious, but it’s his presence in the room that really gives all the guys a boost.”

The perennial Selke candidate was up to his old tricks last night, playing stellar defense and leading by example with his backchecking.

“When you see an offensive guy like that hustling back on defense and putting his body on the line, its makes you want to follow his lead for sure,” said grizzled veteran Ross Machon.

Some fans expressed concern and even frustration with Martmann after he participated in (and won) the TNH 4 on 4 tournament just a few days prior.

“Any time you get the chance to put on that jersey and represent your team in the TNH 4 on 4 Classic, you’re going to do it,” explained Martmann. “I wouldn’t have played if I was hurt. I knew I would be back after the tournament and rejoining the Wings.”

Sam Doyle of Wheel House was asked about Martmann being back in the lineup after last nights loss: “I mean, lets be honest, it sucks for us that he came back last night [laughs]. But him being healthy is good for the game and good for growing the game with the younger generation.”

It wasn’t all good news last night however, as captain Matt Deline was a late scratch due to wanting to stay home and watch the Oscars.
